“Remember the Finnish melodic death and power metal fusion of the late ’90s and early ’00s? Bands like Children of Bodom, Kalmah, and Norther were all the rage for a short while. You even had stuff like Ensiferum for a folkier interpretation, or Catamenia for the blackened side of things. The truth is that it never really left. Suotana is one of the bands keeping this sound alive and well, and they have more history than one might think.” Increasing your death power.
Wintersun
Morbikon – Lost Within the Astral Crypts
“When he’s not dealing in the Slime and Punishment of Municipal Waste or pissing off the neighbors with Iron Reagan, axe-wielder Phil “Landphil” Hall channels his focus into Morbikon. Formed in 2020, Hall’s black metal side-project earned recognition from AMG Industries when FeroxFerox highlighted the supergroup’s debut, Ov Mournful Twilight, as his surprise record of 2022. Rooted in all things kvlt and trve, the album’s second wave frostbitten anthems plunged into the remnants of burned churches and stale corpse paint, resulting in “eight meloblack rippers calibrated to bring winter to your soul and whiplash to your neck.”” Gaze into the Morb.
Valhalore – Beyond the Stars Review
“Valhalore is a great name for a band. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a little goofy—but look, you get it instantly. “Valhalla?” Folk metal. “Lore?” Symphonic/power metal. Put them together and you get that exact album cover. Beyond the Stars is Valhalore’s sophomore release, following a seven-year silence from their debut. It’s a long time to cook up something cool, and I’m an easy mark for this kind of music, but Valhalore are treading a well-worn path in their fusion of styles. The question is certainly not what kind of music you’ll find on Beyond the Stars, but how well it is executed and what will set these Australians apart from their many contemporaries.” Wotan shrugged.
Angry Metal Guy’s Top Ten(ish) of 2024
Starting 2025 with a bang was always important, and I elected the “being 26 days late with your Record o’ the Year post” as the best possible way to give everyone that patented Angry Metal Guy feeling of waiting and waiting only to be smacked in the face with 5000 words that you disagree with entirely. Welcome to the Wonderful World of Executive Dysfunction™! Let’s make a list!
Record(s) o’ the Month – November 2024
The November Record(s) o’ the Month are somewhat timely. This is the only present you’ll be getting from AMG this year. HUMBUG!
Wintersun – Time II Review
After 12 long years, Wintersun’s Time II is finally here. Initially announced before Time I, the album faced delays due to Jari Mäenpää’s dissatisfaction with its sound. Much has been said about Jari and his surprisingly stable band—featuring Nightwish’s Kai Hahto on drums, Jukka Koskinen on bass, and guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari, now with Megadeth. But what’s truly important is whether the wait was worth it. Is Time II a good record? The answers, like the album itself, are both simple and complicated.
Verikalpa – Tuomio Review
I once wrote that Verikalpa bears “the accordion of tradition to the sauna of the metal gods, so that we might have something new to listen to while we drink.” But, let’s be honest, “competent but derivative” is not the praise anyone is looking for when they create music. And so one wonders, four years after my initial exposure, is that the only contribution Verikalpa had to make?
Unleash the Archers – Phantoma Review
“After a two-part series where we saw Immortal converge through trials and tribulations, this year’s Phantoma tosses us into the future (12089, specifically) where AI rules supreme. Presumably inspired by the new wave of AI technologies out there, Unleash the Archers taps into those influences to create a hypersonic sci-fi soundtrack filled with a smattering of synthesized guitar leads and heavy keyboard action to deliver the power metal version of Skynet.” Archers in the machine.
AMG’s Unsigned Band Rodeö: Veriteras – The Dark Horizon
““AMG’s Unsigned Band Rodeö” is a time-honored tradition to showcase the most underground of the underground—the unsigned and unpromoted. This collective review treatment continues to exist to unite our writers in boot or bolster of the bands who remind us that, for better or worse, the metal underground exists as an important part of the global metal scene.” Ride to the Dark Horizon!
Wintersun Announce Time II Delayed Again
Time II is money and Wintersun want theirs.
