“In defiance of the shit burger we’re all eating every day while we wait for the AI drone war to start, 2025 was my best year in a while.” An oddly optimist AMG Himself has written a list.

Record(s) o’ the Month – August 2025
I said last month (well, last week, but who’s counting) that everything had been leading to that point. That’s true, because I was so stoked to make Calva Louise the Record o’ the Month for July in a somewhat relevant fashion that I did a mad dash to get that out in before they were off to their tour in the USA. And then I was left there, feeling empty. I had worked so hard. I had come so far. But in the end, I wondered if it really even mattered.
Blackbraid – Blackbraid III Review
“It takes a lot to quicken pulses at AMG Headquarters. Driven to exhaustion by merciless overlords, constant deadlines, and extended periods in the promo sump, the staff often look like—and have the pulse rate variability of—a hoard of unkempt zombies. But even we took notice when Blackbraid burst out of nowhere with some key singles from his first album, 2022’s Blackbraid I. Here was angry, melodic, accessible black metal, infused with Native American spirit and vigor, that did not rely on tired tropes or clichés. What could have been a gimmick instead lent the material majesty and an epic scope.” Spirit deer in the nightside eclipse.
SpiritWorld – Helldorado Review
“SpiritWorld’s lone appearance ’round these here parts, like any good vigilante, is an entry in the 2022 AOTY list of then-n00b, now gone-but-never-unforgotten ItchyMenace for sophomore album Deathwestern. But guess what? There’s a new sheriff in town, and he’s mad as hell. So mad, he’ll riff you at sundown in front of the town hall at high noon, so say “yeehaw” and “howdy, pardner,” because that piano’s gon’ stop at the saloon because there’s a fire at the watering hole.” Jobs for cowboys.

Blackbraid – Blackbraid I [Things You Might Have Missed 2022]
“The story of Blackbraid I is a tale as old as the mountains. Unknown artist bursts onto a scene that is crying out for something new and original. Artist brings fresh perspective and everyone gets excited. This is the next big thing. Hype builds with promising singles. Debut album is released. Initial reaction from fans is rapturous. But some new listeners feel let down; the promise has not materialized. Since nuance is dead, camps double down: this is either AotY or boilerplate black music that’s been massively overhyped. Sound familiar? This is the trajectory Blackbraid’s debut album, Blackbraid I, took earlier this year when it was released.” Hype meets reality.
