Møtivatiøn – The Infinite 8 Steps tø Pøwer / Møney / Møre Review
“Supergroups are not uncommon in metal. I’m sure each of you can think of three such acts—of perhaps varying quality—in just a couple of seconds. Here are the first three that came to my mind: DOWN, Demons & Wizards and, for some reason, Them Crooked Vultures, which may not even qualify as metal. Also operating on that fuzzy edges of metal is today’s subject, Møtivatiøn. Where those previous bands are supergroups, using that term for Møtivatiøn is an insult to supergroups: the population of this record classifies it as a super conurbation.” Your life needs coaching.
Obsidian Sea – Pathos Review
“Pathos is the fourth full-length from Bulgarian trio Obsidian Sea, and their second for current home, Ripple Music. It is also not at all what I was expecting. Obsidian Sea was unknown to me until I picked this up for review but, given the band name, I was expecting some dark and stormy prog, perhaps infused with elements of doom, sludge or even some epic post-metal. Hellfox – The Call Review
“As I promised in my list post, I’m once more attempting to pick up the writing habit I successfully maintained for the first half of last year. Alas, this does mean venturing into the notoriously barren January promo box. Worse, I was late and my colleagues had nabbed everything promising. My first selection turned out to be a C-tier early-00s darkwave band so far removed from both metal and good music that even I wouldn’t cover it here. Think Collide, but very boring. Fortunately, I did a bit more due diligence on my second attempt. Hellfox, are certainly metal, describing themselves as alt-metal with a melodeath lean.” Hellfox in the groan room.
Lantlôs – Wildhund Review
“Lantlôs (should) need no introduction to those who are familiar with post metal genres. Their core song-writer and multi-instrumentalist, Markus Siegenhort, was there at the genesis of ‘blackgaze,’pushing black metal into a sound that would arguably define its existence through the 2010s. Even Neige of Alcest can be heard on earlier records. This culminated in the 2014’s Melting Sun which is not only the greatest blackgaze record ever but also one of my favorites from the last decade. However, it’s been such a long time since that moment that I feared the band had faded into obscurity. Social media murmurs from last year gave rise to hope and now 2021 finally brings us a sequel called Wildhund. How is their bite after so long?” Long delayed post.

Somehow Jo – Tusk Review
“I’m not sure what, if any, expectations I had for Finnish alt metallers Somehow Jo when I etched my crude shark sigil into the review boulder by their name. It’s not a moniker that really speaks to me and the artwork – although quite pretty – also doesn’t give a lot away. But you can be sure that any expectations I may have unconsciously harbored, plummeted when I read that sophomore album Tusk was written largely in a “small bunker next to a shady titty bar” and that, throughout, the band prioritized “freshness and originality in all of the ideas we’ve brought for the other members to be eaten and then later to be defecated in to a demo of some kind.”” Jo momma.
