Crucible – Hail to the Force Review
“Whether you’re a fledgling artist or an industry veteran, the process of making music is hard, strewn with obstacles internal and external. For the speed/US-inspired power metallers Crucible, that obstacle was Mother Nature, who gifted them a massive snowstorm that drastically impeded their studio time to record their debut album Hail to the Force. The Danes, thus, banged out the entire ten-track, thirty-seven-minute record in a week. For a young band recording a debut together, that’s nuts. But we’re not here for the story—we’re here for the album, a throwback affair of promo-purported “ferocious aggression with strong melodies and epic heavy metal atmospheres.”” Force is always the answer.
LOMMI – 667788 Review
“LOMMI first formed in 2007, but these Swedes are essentially digital ghosts. You’d think an 18-year history would at least come with a multi-album discography, but I have no idea what these guys have done between then and the release of their latest (and possibly only) album, 667788. A Google search mostly pulls results for Tommy Iommi; they have no dedicated page on Metal Archives; and even their label, Majestic Mountain Records, has zilch about them on their site. This lack of a written history leads me to have some doubts about the promo’s claim that these guys are a “formidable force in [Sweden]’s heavy metal underground.” Still, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe they’re just too trve to have built up a digital presence.” Not Iommi.
Fell Omen – Caelid Dog Summer Review
“Raw black metal is a tricky proposition. There’s an extremely thin line to walk between production choices designed to add mood and atmosphere to compositions via a wall of auditory fog and production choices that sound like someone threw their equipment down a block of concrete stairs and deemed it “artistic.” Countless one-man projects launch all the time to throw their hat in the ring with the Black Cilices and Paysage D’hivers of the world, with results ranging from formidable to unlistenable. Hailing from Greece, Fell Omen are newcomers to this arena, with their second album dropping a meagre six months after their first. Such a rapid turnaround implies either a deep creative well or a collection of kiddie-pool shallow ideas, so let’s dive in and see what these dog summer days have to offer.” Never unchain(mail) the knight.
Mantar – Post Apocalyptic Depression Review
“German duo Mantar exploded onto the scene on 2014’s massive debut LP Death By Burning, unleashing a raw collection of doom-flecked, blackened punk-sludge anthems. Boasting a nasty streak and series of ginormous grooves and infectiously hooky riffs and songwriting, the album had a fresh appeal, featuring nods towards legendary acts, Motörhead and Melvins. An equally impressive sophomore album followed, solidifying Mantar as a dependable force as their career progressed. Despite recent efforts not quite hitting the impressive highs of their early work, Mantar remain true to the old ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ motto to solid effect.” Gruesome twosomes.
