“Waldgeflüster has been around for a while. Based in Bavaria, Germany and led by Winterherz, they’ve been weaving nature-themed atmospheric black metal since 2009. Waldgeflüster has passed through the hands of several atmoblack aficionados before me. El Cuervo enjoyed the Panopticon / Waldgeflüster split in 2016 but was less impressed by Ruinen later that year. Doom_et_Al found 2021’s Dahoam to be disappointing and unmemorable. Waldgeflüster used the four years since then to create double albums Knochengesänge I and Knochengesänge II. I is a more traditional atmoblack record, while II is a reconstruction of the same melodies from the standpoint of various non-metal musical genres. An intriguing idea, to be sure. Is Knochengesänge so nice you’ll want to listen to it twice?” Knoch two times.
Atmospheric Black Metal
Sunken – Lykke Review
“I love Sunken’s music. It’s been over five years since I first heard their sophomore full-length, Livslede, an album I fell in love with almost instantly for its depressive, atmospheric black metal, an album of incredible emotion buoyed by exceptional songwriting. Since then, it’s been a regular revisit any time I’m having an even vaguely unhappy day, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting the day I could review these Danes again. At last that day is here. Sunken are back with their third full-length release, Lykke.” Sunk costs.
Dysylumn – Abstraction Review
“There’s a distinctive quality about French black metal that hints at its creators’ origin—and I don’t mean the language the lyrics are written in. It’s a sort of warmth that soaks into the guitar sound, which can alternately feel like roaring flames, spooky ethereality, or quaint mellifluousness depending on its implementation. Given this, it’s almost surprising that no one has done what Dysylumn do, and coalesced these interpretations into one.” One sub-genre to rule them all.
Morke – To Carry On Review
“One of my favorite bits in the game Portal 2 comes near the very beginning, when the player is commanded to go stand in front of a piece of art. It’s an okay piece, depicting a lovely mountain overlooking a lakeside cabin where everything looks peaceful, somewhat colorful, and safe. By the end of our momentary study, we are assured we should now feel “mentally invigorated.” Such mental vim and vigor is sought out in more artistic albums, which don’t seek to liquify teeth as much as transport us to other realms and times, whether it be brimming with life and motion or a well-executed snapshot of a mood. Morke, a project spearheaded by sole member Eric Wing, have arrived with self-described “Atmospheric Castle Metal” on display for their fourth album To Carry On.” Morke in the moat.
Stuck in the Filter: July 2025’s Angry Misses
July Filters get sticky from the heat. It takes time to cool em down and unstickify those rascals. We did it though, for YOU.
Rauhnåcht – Zwischenwelten Review
“Rauhnåcht’s latest offering, Zwischenwelten, poetically translates to “the worlds between worlds,” and posits reality as a series of crossroads between antitheses, creating worlds unto themselves.” Thesis. Antithesis. Synthesis. All culture produced in German leads to Hegel.
HERETOIR – Solastalgia Review
“Fall in the Pacific Northwest means two things: foggy air and the official start of sadboi season. And German post-black quintet HERETOIR are here to offer a choice soundtrack for the colder, darker months ahead. Since its inception as a solo project by multi-instrumentalist David Conrad in 2006, HERETOIR has been a mainstay in the blackgaze scene, crafting music that has been a long-standing source of catharsis while operating in the darkness with other well-known acts like Alcest and Fen. Solastalgia marks the trio’s fourth full-length album, but the first one we’ve reviewed here. Still, the group’s presence at AMG Industries isn’t entirely new.” Birds of gaze.
Jord – Emellan Träden Review
“Jord began life in pretty much the exact way one would expect of an atmospheric black metal act. Founder Jörgen “Jurg” Ström would take daily walks through the forests of Sweden during fall 2020, during which he decided to start a nature-oriented musical endeavor. He quickly released two albums, Sol and Måne, on his own before recruiting guitarist Sebastian “Hravn” Svedlund and drummer Stefan Jansson, both of whom he had briefly performed with in Rimfrost and its splinter group Omnicidal. They worked together to create Tundra in 2023, and now look to extend their productive streak with Emellan Träden, Jord’s fourth full-length record in five years.” Forest packaging.
Finnr’s Cane – Finnr’s Cane Review
“Finnr is an Old Norse name that loosely translates to “wanderer” in English. Whether or not this was the inspiration for Finnr’s Cane, it’s an apt moniker for an atmospheric black metal act. Hailing from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, this studio-only group has three prior albums under its belt, the last of which, Elegy, won the overall approval of Ferrous Beuller
in 2018. And now, Finnr’s Cane seems to signal a new era with the release of self-titled album number four.” No cane, no gane.
